Former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin believes Virat Kohli could have played Test cricket for another year or two and should have continued his career. Ashwin hailed Kohli for his incredible energy and dedication, which he displayed in every facet of the game, whether batting, leading, or competing with intensity.

Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket on Monday, bringing an end to a career that began in 2011. In 123 Test matches, he scored 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85, including 30 centuries. His leadership played a crucial role in India’s ascent to the number one spot in the Test rankings and the historic series win against Australia in 2018-19.

“What truly set him apart was his incredible energy, whether he was batting, captaining, or just competing. There were times when I wanted to ask Virat, ‘What did you have for breakfast today?’” Ashwin shared on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin reflected on Kohli’s retirement, speculating that the energy that was his greatest asset may have played a role in his decision. He recognised that Kohli’s relentless intensity might have led to burnout.

“But I can’t help but feel that Virat still had a couple of years left in him. That thought has been on my mind for some time. Could his energy levels have led to the retirement? Perhaps Virat felt that he no longer had the mental strength to push himself further.”

Ashwin also highlighted the toll of constant excellence, suggesting that the pursuit of perfection can be draining, even for the best athletes.

“The search for excellence can sometimes result in your undoing in sport. The high standards you set for yourself can eventually catch up with you,” Ashwin added.

Ashwin and Rohit Sharma have also bid adieu to Test cricket. Since his debut in 2011, Kohli guided India to the No. 1 spot in the Test rankings, setting a record for the most centuries by an Indian captain, with 20 in total. His respect for Tendulkar influenced his connection to Test cricket. Despite challenges, like his issues with deliveries outside the off-stump and difficulty with the sweep shot, Kohli maximised his strengths and excelled.
