The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is poised for a return, days after it was abruptly suspended due to escalating cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan. With improved security conditions and a ceasefire now in effect, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce a revised schedule shortly.
The IPL 2025 was officially suspended on Friday, May 9, following Pakistan’s missile strikes that targeted regions including Satwari, Samba, RS Pura, and Arnia. Although all missiles were intercepted by India’s air defence systems and no venues were directly hit, the decision was taken swiftly to prioritise the safety of players, staff, and fans.
The move came just hours after the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamshala was called off midway. At the time of suspension, 16 matches remained—12 league games and four playoffs.
Sunrisers Hyderabad announced full refunds for tickets to their home game against Kolkata Knight Riders, originally scheduled for May 10. The match was to be held at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad.
“In light of the current situation, #TATAIPL2025 has been suspended with immediate effect. Ticket refund details will be communicated shortly,” SRH posted on their official social media handles.
BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla told reporters on Sunday that while a final decision on the revised schedule has not yet been taken, officials are actively working on the matter.
In a statement issued earlier, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the decision to suspend IPL 2025 was made in consultation with franchises, broadcasters, and key stakeholders.
This marks a rare disruption in IPL history. The last such suspension occurred in 2021 during the COVID-19 second wave, when the tournament was halted and later resumed in the UAE.
As the security situation stabilises and discussions progress, fans can expect an announcement regarding the new schedule and venues in the coming days.
