IPL 2025 Poised for Resumption Next Week after Ceasefire Agreement
The 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season is reportedly set to resume next week, potentially from Thursday, May 15th, or Friday, May 16th, following its temporary suspension due to tensions between India and Pakistan. This positive development for the tournament comes after an agreement on a ceasefire between the two nations was announced on Saturday, May 10th.
Resumption Following Ceasefire
The lucrative T20 league was halted for a week on May 9th as a precautionary measure amidst escalating cross-border tensions. With the situation now de-escalating following the ceasefire, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is actively working to finalize the remaining fixtures of the tournament. According to reports, matches are expected to be held across various venues in India, with the exception of Dharamsala.
Logistical Arrangements and Player Return
The suspension had led to some overseas players beginning their journey back to their home countries, reportedly due to international airport shutdowns. Franchises will now commence arrangements for these players to rejoin their respective squads, awaiting detailed instructions from the BCCI. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed that the BCCI is exploring the possibility of resuming the league “immediately” after consulting with all stakeholders, including team owners, broadcasters, and the government.
BCCI Reviewing Schedule and Venues
BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla stated that the board, along with the IPL Governing Council and other officials, will meet imminently (likely Sunday, May 11th) to review the tournament schedule. “All aspects, including venues, which were originally decided during the time of conflict will be reconsidered. A final decision will be taken shortly,” Mr. Shukla said. Prior to the ceasefire, the BCCI had reportedly considered a contingency plan to host the remaining 17 matches (including playoffs) in a limited number of southern cities, but may now revert to the original schedule.
The agreement to a ceasefire between India and Pakistan has provided a crucial window for the IPL 2025 to resume and conclude. The BCCI is now focused on swiftly reorganising the schedule and logistics to ensure the remainder of the matches to be can be completed.
