The Impact Player rules was introduced in the Indian Premier League in 2023 season, with an aim to add more entertainment for the fans.

Kolkata: After Indian captain Rohit Sharma, pacer Mohammed Siraj spoke his heart out urging the Indian Premier League (IPL) organizers to remove the ‘Impact Player’ rule as it is affecting his game plan. Introduced in 2023, the ‘Impact Player’ Rule allows a team to substitute a batter or bowler during the game as per situations. However, although it added more entertainment to the game, but at the same time, it also made a negative impact on a player’s skill – be it batting or bowling.

Nonetheless, it limits the potential of an all-rounder. As a result, the likes of Shivam Dube, Venkatesh Iyer, and Abhishek Sharma were not seen bowling in the IPL, which wasn’t the case before the 2023 season. Siraj complained that with the wickets being flat and the batters swinging at every delivery, bowlers are left with no help.

“Please remove this impact sub thing (laughs), the wickets are already flat and there’s nothing for the bowlers in it, previously, it used to be slow at times, but the batters now come out swinging at absolutely everything,” said Siraj ahead of RCB’s do-or-die game against KKR on Sunday.

“My game plan is to be consistent, if a good ball gets hit, so be it. It was a long time that teams made 250+, but it has become such a common feature now (thanks to impact sub and the flat pitches),” he added. Earlier in the week, Rohit also gave a negative view on Impact Player rule.

“I am not a big fan of Impact sub rule. It is going to hold all-rounders back, eventually cricket is played by 11 players not 12 players. You are taking out so much from game to make it entertaining for people around. If you look just from the cricketing aspect of it I feel guys like Shivam Dube and Washington Sundar aren’t getting to bowl, which for us is not a good thing,” Rohit said on ‘Club Prairie Fire’ podcast.

However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) hasn’t allowed the Impact Player rule in T20Is.
