Kolkata: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) may have won the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Sunday by the barest of margins – one run – at the Eden Gardens, but talks will be on for some time about the controversial dismissal of Virat Kohli. Chasing 223, RCB got off to a great start with Kohli smacking 18 off just six balls before a Harshit Rana ended his stay at the crease.

Going wide of the line, Kohli tried to put a loopy full toss from Rana that seemed to be dipping on the batter. Instead, the ball went high up in the air for the bowler to take a simple catch. The former RCB captain immediately went upstairs and to his surprise the third umpire Michael Gough ruled Kohli out.

Clearly, Kohli was unhappy with the decision and even vented his frustration out on the on-field umpires and to a dustbin while walking out. But the IPL’s newest technology says the star batter was logically out. According to the new Hawk-Eye ball tracking technology, the height of Kohli’s waist was measured at 1.04m (standing upright). Had Kohli been upright at his crease, the ball would have passed him at 0.92m below his waist, thus making it a legal delivery.

For the unknown, the IPL has this time introduced this technology to check the measurement of the height of the ball when it passes the batter at popping crease. The measured height is then checked with toe-to-waist height of the batter (in upright position). This is to be noted that the toe-to-waist height of the batter is being measured and recorded in advance. If the recorded height is lower than the height of the ball, it is declared a no ball.

Even former pacer Irfan Pathan too explained the delivery from Rana was legal. “BCCI has measured the body height and waist height of each player in IPL 2024, so those data have been used here, so the technology can’t be so wrong and it was clear out,” he said.
