Berlin, May 5 — German football giants Bayern Munich have officially secured their record 34th Bundesliga title — and their 12th consecutive league championship — without even taking the field on Sunday, after title challengers Bayer Leverkusen were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by SC Freiburg.
The result mathematically confirmed Bayern’s position at the top of the table, as Leverkusen failed to close the gap, leaving the defending champions uncatchable with just two rounds remaining in the season.
Bayer Leverkusen needed a win to stay alive in the title race after Bayern Munich drew 3-3 with RB Leipzig on Saturday. However, Freiburg had other plans. The hosts took the lead in the 44th minute through Maximilian Eggesteinwhose deflected shot gave them a 1-0 advantage.
Leverkusen’s woes compounded early in the second half when defender Piero emphasis inadvertently scored an own goal in the 49th minute, pushing Freiburg ahead 2-0.
Desperate to keep their title hopes alive, Leverkusen mounted a late comeback. Midfielder Florian Wirtz pulled one back in the 82nd minute, and Jonathan tah equalized during stoppage time. Despite the late drama, Leverkusen could not find a winner, handing Bayern the title on a silver platter.
With the draw, Bayer Leverkusen remain on 68 pointswhile Bayern Munich sit comfortably atop the table with 76 points. With only two matches left, Bayern are now mathematically out of reach.
This marks Bayern’s 34th Bundesliga title since the league’s inception in 1963 — a number unmatched in German football history. The Munich-based club continues to dominate domestic football, extending their unprecedented streak of 12 straight league triumphs.
