South African pacer Kagiso Rabada has revealed that his absence from the IPL 2025 season was due to a provisional suspension following a positive test for a recreational drug. The 28-year-old speedster had played just two matches for Gujarat Titans before flying back home on April 3, with the franchise initially citing an “important personal matter.”
In a statement issued via the South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA)Rabada admitted to returning an adverse analytical finding and acknowledged he was “deeply sorry” for letting down his fans, teammates, and the cricket community. The specific substance has not been disclosed, but Rabada’s month-long absence aligns with past recreational drug- suspensions in global sport.
Cricbuzz reports that Rabada is now en route back to India and may rejoin GT’s squad soonpotentially even for their upcoming clash against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede on Tuesday.
Despite his absence, Gujarat Titans have performed impressively — winning 7 out of 10 matches and sitting second on the points table. However, with the playoffs in sight, Rabada’s return could provide a timely boost to their bowling arsenal.
The USD 1.28 million signing remains a key figure in the squad, and fans will be watching closely to see when he takes the field again.
