In a landmark moment for Indian Premier League (IPL) history, Yuzvendra chahal secured his second career hat-trick in the clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the iconic M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on April 30, 2025. With this feat, Chahal joined an elite group of bowlers who have achieved multiple hat-tricks in the tournament.
With the game tilting in CSK’s favor, Chahal turned the tide in the penultimate over. The Punjab Kings leg-spinner first removed Deepak Hooda with a well-disguised googly, followed it up by cleaning up Anshul kambojand then dismissing Noor Ahmad with a ripping leg-break. He ended the game with figures of 4/32 in 3 overs — a match-defining effort.
Chahal’s previous hat-trick came in IPL 2022 while playing for Rajasthan Royals against Kolkata Knight Riders. In a fiery over, he scalped four wickets including the prized dismissals of Venkatesh Iyer, Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Maviand Pat Cummins — all in a single over.
Hat-tricks have always been rare and celebrated in IPL history. As of April 2025, only 23 hat-tricks have been recorded across 16 IPL seasons by 19 different bowlers. The frequency of such events adds to their legendary status.
Among all bowlers, veteran spinner Amit mishra stands out with three IPL hat-tricks to his name — achieved in 2008, 2011, and 2013. Chahal, with two to his name now, is not far behind and continues to be one of the most consistent performers with the ball in T20 cricket.
While hat-tricks are often the highlight in a bowler’s career, there are instances when even recognized batters have achieved this feat. Veteran all-rounder Yuvraj Singh claimed two hat-tricks in a single season (2009), making him the only player to do so. Further, star batter Rohit sharma also finds a spot in this list from his days as an occasional bowler for Deccan Chargers —showcasing the unpredictability of T20 cricket.
