David Warner hasn’t justified the trust shown by Delhi Capitals. The southpaw is dropping catches, and his runs have dried up in IPL 2024. For the record, Warner hasn’t positively impacted the team since joining them in 2022. His strike rate has decreased, and the big scores are not coming.
He was bought for INR 6.25 crore, and head coach Ricky Ponting was behind the move. David led Delhi in 2023 when regular captain Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the season due to injuries from a car accident. In the 17th season, Warner’s flop show has played a part in the franchise’s struggles.
Former India player Navjot Singh Sidhu failed to understand the logic behind Delhi Capitals’ interest in Warner.
“No offence to David Warner, but I don’t understand what Delhi Capitals saw in him and why they bought him in the first place. He is a prominent cricketer but is like an ageing soldier. Warner hasn’t played a lot for Australia, and this should have been considered before buying him.
“He has failed to match up the pace of the T20 format. It is good to come to India with your families, but your main job is to score runs for the team. You can’t take too many balls to score runs as an opener, as the game has changed a lot. Warner has failed on this front. Delhi will hav to rethink about his place in the Playing XI,” Navjot Singh Sidhu said on Star Sports.
Warner’s strike rate has been highlighted since the last IPL season, and former players like Virender Sehwag don’t find him suitable to play for Delhi in the cash-rich league.
