Success in cricket is not just about batting techniques or bowling prowess. It doesn’t come only with the ability to smash a full toss delivery onto the stadium roof or to slam a yorker at a blistering 140 km per hour. These are obvious qualities. But not the only ones.

A case in point is the success story of Rajasthan Royals’ young prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi.

The 14-year-old sensation blasted his way to the fastest century by an Indian in the Indian Premier League (IPL) on Monday (April 28) against the Gujarat Titans.

Parents’ sacrifice

Suryavanshi’s success is directly to the sacrifices made by his family. Despite the drudgery of everyday domestic work, his mother used to shrug off her fatigue and wake up at the crack of dawn to prepare food for her son so that he could make it to his cricket practice on time.

Meanwhile, his father sacrificed his career. He left his job to focus on honing his son’s skills. His elder brother is now earning for the family.

Suryavanshi’s honest admission of his parents’ role in his success was appreciated by his fans, just as his towering 90 metre maximum over long-on in the opening over was applauded in Monday’s match.

‘Grateful to my parents’

“Whatever I am today, I owe it to my parents. My mother used to wake up early because I had to go for practice, and she used to prepare food for me. She would sleep for three hours. My father left his work for me, and my big brother is handling it now.

We were struggling. My father has backed me and said I would be able to achieve it. Whatever result is visible today, and the success I have achieved, is due to my parents,” Vaibhav said in a video posted by IPL on X.

Unlike, the Gujarat Titans, who were clueless about how to stop Suryavanshi’s relentless assault on their bowlers, the batting sensation had set his sights on taking his game to the next level.

In Monday’s match, his fiery 101 in 38 deliveries led to the crushing defeat for the Gujarat Titans, who ultimately managed to dismiss him with a searing yorker from Prasidh Krishna.

Yet, it appears that Suryavanshi’s run in the 22 yards seems to be far from over.
