After the Pahalgam attack, Indian cricket team’s head coach and former BJP MP Gautam Gambhir finds himself at the centre of a security scare after he reportedly received a death threat from ‘ISIS Kashmir’.

Police sources on Thursday (April 24) told PTI that Gambhir received two threat mails and contained just three words: “I kill you”.

Gambhir immediately approached the Delhi police and registered a complaint at the Rajinder Nagar police station and submitted a request to file an FIR into the matter.

Police launch investigations

Gambhir’s office confirming the threat said in a statement: “Former BJP MP and current head coach of the Indian cricket team, Gautam Gambhir, received a death threat from ‘ISIS Kashmir’. On Wednesday, he approached the Delhi Police, filing a formal complaint for an FIR and seeking measures to safeguard his family’s security.”

The threats were reportedly received on April 22, the same day terrorists gunned down 26 people, mostly tourists, in Kashmir’s Pahalgam.

It came via a suspicious Gmail account, said PTI.

This isn’t the first time Gambhir has been threatened. In November 2021, he received similar threats, prompting the authorities to tighten his security measures.

Lying low

Post the terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed 26 lives, Gambhir was among the first sporting figures to speak out. In a post on X, he wrote, “Praying for the families of the deceased.

Those responsible for this will pay. India will strike.”

Gambhir has been lying low since India’s Champions Trophy win in March. As a rule, national team coaches step back as the Indian Premier League 2025 gets underway to use this period as a break. He had recently returned from a holiday in France with his family.

Gambhir was appointed as head coach of Team India in July last year.

He took over from World Cup-winning coach Rahul Dravid.
