Abhishek Nayar's stint as Team India's assistant coach ended abruptly as he was recently sacked. He joined Team India's backroom staff in July 2024 and was sacked just 8 months after his appointment.
The BCCI has yet to confirm his sacking but he has already rejoined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as their assistant coach. Abhishek Nayar was present in KKR's dug-out during their match against Gujarat Titans.Following Nayar's sacking, a report has made a huge claim and revealed whether Rohit Sharma was consulted before it or not. Rohit, who was struggling for runs in IPL 2025, "thanked" Nayar following his match-winning knock against Chennai Super Kings.Dainik Jagran has reported that Rohit Sharma was consulted before Nayar's appointment, but that wasn't the case at the time of his removal.
Nayar was among the coaches handpicked by Gautam Gambhir.Gambhir joined KKR as their mentor before IPL 2024 and propelled them to a title win. The BCCI appointed Gambhir as Team India's head coach after the IPL and gave him a free hand. Apart from Nayar, Ryan ten Doeschate and Morne Morkel also joined Team India's backroom staff on Gambhir's recommendations. A domestic cricket legend, Nayar played 103 first-class, 99 List A and 95 T20 matches. In IPL, he was part of Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Pune Warriors. Nayar retired from domestic cricket in 2019.
