In the Indian Premier League 2025, suddenly umpires have started examining the bat of the players. Usually, the bats are examined in the dressing room, but now the umpires are asking for bat from the players on the ground. On Sunday, the bats of Shimron Hetmyer, Phil Sold and Hardik Pandya were investigated. Usually, the players' bat examines in the dressing room before the match, but what is the reason that the umpire started working during the match itself. Was more size bat being used in IPL, why did BCCI do this?
It is a normal thing to be checked in the size of the bat, but till the last IPL season it used to be checked inside the dressing room.
However, BCCI has now given the match officers that they can examine any bat even during the match, if they feel that it is necessary.A former BCCI umpire, who has umpiring more than 100 IPL matches and many international matches, expressed surprise at this new process. In a conversation with PTI, he said, 'Umpirs have' house-shaped 'bat gauge. If the bat fit into this gauge, it is considered correct.
Earlier this investigation was done in the dressing room before the innings started. The players used to collect their bat and they were examined. 'Now the question is, was a player using another on the field by giving a bat for investigation? If this has happened, then this new protocol is the right step. Players always take many bat. Weight can vary, but the bat length, width (face), thickness (middle part of the blade) and the thickness of the edge should be within the limit fixed by the ICC.The bat of Shimron Hetmyer (Rajasthan Royals), Phil Salt (RCB), Hardik Pandya (Mumbai Indians) was checked and all the bat was found according to the rules.
However, BCCI did not make it clear whether any player was violating the rules, due to which this investigation was started. Let me tell you that in the era of power-touching nowadays, a little excess thickness or wide edge of the bat also turns Miss-Hit into six. This is the reason that this season has so far hit 525 sixes, out of which Nicholas Puran of West Indies has hit 31 sixes alone. If the BCCI is conducting this kind of investigation, then it is good for the game.
