The ongoing tension between Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises and pitch curators has now reached the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batting coach Dinesh Karthik has raised concerns about home pitches, following complaints from CSK, KKR, and LSG.
The Royal Challengers have suffered back-to-back defeats at their home ground, the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. They suffered a six-wicket loss to Delhi Capitals (DC) in their recent match in Bengaluru on Thursday, April 10. Karthik's comments on home pitches in IPL 2025 fueled the ongoing debate.
We Have Asked for Good Pitches - Dinesh Karthik
During the post-match press conference, Dinesh Karthik revealed that the team had requested a batting-friendly surface, but the pitches were difficult for batters. He said that the "tricky" wicket didn't suit their aggressive batting style.
"I think the way T20 cricket is, the more runs there are, the better it is for the broadcaster, the better it is for the fans. They all like to see boundaries. In the first two games, we have asked for good pitches.
But it's turned out in this way where it's been challenging to bat on, for sure," Dinesh Karthik said."Definitely, this is not a pitch that's helping the batters too much. It's a challenging pitch. That has been the case so far in both the games that we have played," he added.
We Will Try and Do the Best of What We Can - Dinesh Karthik
Dinesh Karthik said that he plans to speak with the pitch curator regarding the playing conditions. He pointed out that the surface has made it difficult for batters to rotate strikes or hit big shots. Karthik added that the team trusts the curator and will try to do their best.
"There's been a wobble when people have tried to stay out there and fight it out as well. It's been hard to, at times, rotate the strike. And the big shot has been really hard as well. So we have tried to control it [the urge to keep hitting]," Karthik asserted.
"But, at the end, it's a T20. You have to play some shots, and that has gotten the wicket of a few batters. We will obviously have a chat with the curator. We trust him to do his job, and we will try and do the best of what we can," he further said.
RCB's Flying Start Ended with Batting Collapse at Home
Royal Challengers Bengaluru got off to a flying start against Delhi Capitals. They scored 61 without loss in just 3.4 overs. However, they lost seven wickets for just 64 runs in the next 13.3 overs, collapsing to 125 for 7.
DC's wrist-spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam played a major role in the collapse. The batters struggled with timing, especially when attempting aerial shots.
Devdutt Padikkal managed just 1 run from 8 balls, and captain Rajat Patidar scored 25 off 23.
Liam Livingstone (4 from 6), Jitesh Sharma (3 off 11), and Krunal Pandya (18 off 18) also had disappointing outings.RCB lost the game by six wickets, with DC batter KL Rahul anchoring the chase with an unbeaten 93. This was RCB's second home loss of the season, following an earlier eight-wicket defeat to Gujarat Titans, where they could only post 169/8.
