The Punjab Kings (PBKS) have entered IPL 2025 with renewed ambition under the dynamic leadership of Shreyas Iyer and the astute guidance of Ricky Ponting. The franchise has built a well-rounded squad featuring explosive match-winners like Marcus Stoinis, Glenn Maxwell, and Lockie Ferguson—players who can turn the tide of the game on their day. After an encouraging start with back-to-back wins against the Gujarat Titans (GT) and the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Punjab faced their first major hiccup in the form of a 50-run defeat to the Rajasthan Royals (RR), where they fell short in a 206-run chase.
As they gear up to face the seemingly deflated Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Tuesday, April 8, at the PCA New International Cricket Stadium, PBKS will have to tighten a few bolts to overcome Ruturaj Gaikwad’s yellow brigade. CSK may not have the same flair as in previous seasons, but their consistency, experience, and calm decision-making make them one of the most dangerous opponents in IPL history.
Here are 4 key changes PBKS must make to enhance their chances of defeating CSK in this crucial encounter.
1. Replace Priyansh Arya with Vishnu Vinod as Opener
Punjab Kings’ experiment with the young and promising Priyansh Arya started on a high. He made headlines with a brisk 47 in the opening game, showcasing fearless strokeplay. However, the past two outings have revealed a different story—scores of 8 and a first-ball duck suggest that the nerves may be catching up to the young opener.
In a high-pressure match against CSK, PBKS can ill-afford a shaky start. Vishnu Vinod is an ideal replacement—an attacking wicketkeeper-batsman who has shown the ability to take on the new ball in domestic cricket. Importantly, bringing him into the XI allows Prabhsimran Singh to focus solely on his batting. The added responsibility of wicketkeeping may be affecting his performance at the top.
Vishnu’s inclusion brings balance, experience, and flexibility. He also offers a left-field x-factor that could surprise CSK’s opening bowlers. Getting a solid and explosive start in the Powerplay is crucial, especially against a disciplined bowling unit like CSK.
2. Find a Way to Include Josh Inglis in the XI
It’s never easy to balance overseas players in an IPL squad, especially when you have names like Maxwell, Stoinis, Marco Jansen, and Lockie Ferguson in the mix. However, Josh Inglis is too good a talent to warm the bench for long. The Australian wicketkeeper-batsman has a remarkable track record in white-ball cricket, including a blistering 120 off 80 balls against England in the 2025 Champions Trophy—a knock that powered Australia to chase a mammoth 350-run target.
Inglis brings composure, aggression, and reliability to the middle order. He can stabilize an innings or accelerate when needed. His ability to bat anywhere from No. 3 to No. 6 gives PBKS multiple tactical options.
If PBKS want to include Inglis, they’ll need to take a tough call—perhaps resting either Jansen or Ferguson. Given CSK’s record against pace, it might be wiser to drop Ferguson and go with a spin-heavy approach while relying on Indian pacers. The prospect of a middle order featuring Inglis, Maxwell, and Stoinis could be a nightmare for any opposition.
3. Rest Yuzvendra Chahal for Harpreet Brar
While Yuzvendra Chahal is a seasoned campaigner and among the highest wicket-takers in IPL history, his current form is far from impressive. In the first three matches this season, Chahal has taken just one wicket, and in two of those games, he didn’t even complete his quota of four overs due to being too expensive.
At this point, PBKS might be better off giving Harpreet Brar a run. The left-arm spinner has been waiting patiently in the wings and has previously delivered for the franchise in clutch moments. More importantly, he offers batting depth, something that can make a big difference on tricky Mohali tracks.
Brar is a homegrown PBKS product who brings passion and intent every time he steps on the field. In conditions where the ball grips and turns, his style of bowling could trouble CSK’s middle-order stalwarts like Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shivam Dube, and Ravindra Jadeja. Brar’s ability to contain runs and take wickets in the middle overs can be a valuable asset against a team that thrives on building steady momentum.
4. Promote Nehal Wadhera to Number 4
Nehal Wadhera has been one of the brightest sparks in PBKS’ campaign so far. In just two innings this season, batting at No. 5, the southpaw has scored 43 off 25 and 62 off 41—both quickfire knocks that came under pressure and nearly changed the outcome of the games.
Promoting him to number 4 ahead of the likes of Stoinis and Maxwell could give PBKS a stable left-handed option in the top-middle order. A left-hander in the No. 4 slot helps in disrupting the rhythm of right-arm heavy bowling attacks like CSK’s. It also balances the batting order and prevents the side from being too right-hand dominant.
Wadhera has shown the ability to rotate strike and go big when needed. Letting him bat one or two positions higher allows PBKS to build a strong platform in the middle overs, which in turn sets the stage for the explosive Stoinis-Maxwell combo to finish the innings in style.
Time to Be Bold and Tactical
The loss against the Rajasthan Royals was a timely wake-up call for a team that had started their season on the front foot. CSK may not be as dominant on paper as in previous seasons, but underestimating them is a trap that PBKS cannot afford to fall into. To defeat CSK, Punjab must not only rely on individual brilliance but also make smart, tactical decisions that optimize the squad’s strengths. They have managed to defeat CSK 4 times in the last 5 meetings.
From making changes at the top to reshuffling the middle order and rotating the bowling attack, this match offers PBKS an opportunity to correct their course and assert dominance in the IPL standings. A win against CSK would not only boost their confidence but also announce to the league that PBKS, under Iyer and Ponting mean business.
