Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar used a unique Halley's Comet reference to criticise Glenn Maxwell's recent form with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL), after the Punjab Kings all-rounder failed yet again to score an impactful knock in his side's clash against Rajasthan Royals on April 5. Manjrekar drew similarity between Halley's Comet-which appears once in 75 years-and how the Australian all-rounder scores one good knock as rarely as once in 75 games.
Glenn Maxwell's form with the bat had been an issue from IPL 2024, which had ultimately seen the 36-year-old released by his former franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru ahead of the 2025 mega auction, despite being one of the fan favourites. This year too, Maxwell has failed to fire for his new side Punjab Kings, scoring just 37 runs in his three matches with the side this season, including a 30-run knock in their recent clash against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday. Speaking to JioHotstar, Manjrekar connected Maxwell's batting success in IPL as rare as the Halley's Comet, as the PBKS batter continues to struggle to find runs with the bat.
"Halley's Comet orbits the sun and is visible from Earth once every 75 years. Just like that, Glenn Maxwell plays one good match in 75 games. It was last seen in 1986, and it will now be spotted in 2061. It's the same case with Maxwell in batting. Glenn Maxwell is Halley's Comet of Cricket," Manjrekar said.
Despite his batting mishaps this season . Although he has picked only two wickets in three matches this season so far, the two were of big importance-of Lucknow Super Giants skipper Rishabh Pant and Gujarat Giants skipper Shubman Gill.
However, after a defeat to RR by 50 runs, the likes of Punjab batter Nehal Wadhera, who majorly anchored the home side's chase with his 63 off 41 balls, could have used support from the likes of Maxwell in their 206 chase.
