Arshdeep Singh’s three-wicket haul in the first inning contained LSG with a score of 171 while in the second half of the game, Punjab Kings’ batters chased down the target in 16.2 overs and registered their second victory of the season.
This is the fourth instance for Punjab Kings winning their first two matches in a season. Prior to this season, PBKS have won their first two games in a season in 2014, 2017, and 2023.
Prabhsimran Singh’s aggressive knock also played a vital role in the Punjab Kings’ success in away conditions. Prabhsimran Singh went on to bag the Player of the Match award for his match winning knock.
Speaking of the match, Punjab Kings won the toss and opted to bowl first. Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh opened the inning for LSG, while Arshdeep Singh opened the bowling attack for Punjab Kings.
Arshdeep Singh in the very first over of the inning dismissed Mitchell Marsh for golden duck and drew the first blood for LSG. Soon, Ferguson in the fourth over, dismissed the Markram for 28 runs and loaded pressure over the LSG batting lineup.
In the very next over, Maxwell dismissed Rishabh Pant for two runs and made a massive breakthrough. At the end of six overs, LSG managed to score just 39 runs for three wickets.
Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni started to build a partnership and managed to score 88 runs for three wickets at the end of 11 overs. Chahal in the 12th over, broke the 50 runs stand by dismissing Pooran for 44 runs.
While Ayush Badoni and David Miller slowly started to build a partnership Marco Jansen in the 16th over dismissed Miller for 19 runs and broke the partnership. With Abdul Samad’s quickfire 12 balls 27 runs LSG managed to score 171 runs for seven wicket at the end of 20 overs.
While chasing Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh opened the inning for Punjan Kings. Digvesh Rathi in the third over made the first breakthrough by dismissing Priyansh Arya for 8 runs.
Following his dismissal, Prabhsimran Singh and Shreyas Iyer started to build a partnership and pushed the team’s core to reach 62 at the end of the first powerplay.
Prabhsimran Singh went on to score the fastest IPL fifty in Lucknow bettering Sunil Narine’s 27-ball effort against LSG last year.
LSG bowlers struggled to break the partnership as the duo dragged the team to score 110 for one wicket loss at the end of 10 overs. In the very next over Digvesh Rathi dismissed Prabhsimran for 69 runs and broke the well-settled partnership.
Though PBKS lost their long-standing batter, skipper Shreyas Iyer and Nehal Wadhera continued the momentum and guided PBKS to chase the target in 16.2 overs.
