The 33rd match of IPL 2024 was played today (April 18) between Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings at Mullanpur. In this exciting match, Mumbai Indians have defeated Punjab Kings by 9 runs. Mumbai scored 192 runs while batting first. Suryakumar Yadav's powerful half-century helped MI reach a big score.
Chasing the target after this, Punjab got off to an embarrassing start as Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee bowled dangerously in their spells and reduced Punjab to 14 for 4 in just 4 overs.
Purple cap holder Jasprit Bumrah took 3 wickets in the match and broke the back of Punjab's batting. Ashutosh Sharma scored the most runs for Punjab. Ashutosh scored 61 off 28 balls, which included 2 fours and 7 sixes, but could not lead the team to victory.
In the last 6 overs, Punjab Kings needed 65 runs to win, but only 3 wickets in hand. But at the other end, Ashutosh Sharma was batting in a stormy style. When Akash Madhwal came to bowl the 16th over of the innings, he conceded 24 runs in this over. From here the match started to look one sided as now Punjab needed just 28 runs from 24 balls.
But after Ashutosh's wicket fell in the 18th over, the match tilted in favor of Mumbai. Punjab needed 23 runs in the last 2 overs. When Harpreet Brar was dismissed for 21 off 20 balls, Punjab's hopes of victory were almost gone.
Punjab needed 12 runs off the last 6 balls. Harshal Patel and Kagiso Rabada were at the crease. But on the very first ball of the over, Kagiso Rabada was run out for the second run.
As soon as Rabada was run out, the Punjab team was all out for 183 runs. Mumbai won this match by 9 runs.
Jasprit Bumrah and Gerald Coetzee put Punjab Kings on the back foot in their opening spells for Mumbai Indians. Both bowled brilliantly and took 3 wickets each in their respective 4 overs. Bumrah now tops the race for the Purple Cap with 13 wickets in IPL 2014. Apart from him, Hardik Pandya, Akash Madhwal and Shreyas Gopal also took one wicket each. Especially Akash and Shreyas Gopal gave a lot of runs.
Earlier, Mumbai scored 192 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs. Suryakumar Yadav performed brilliantly for Mumbai. He scored 78 off 53 balls. During this he hit 7 fours and 3 sixes. Rohit Sharma scored 36 runs. Tilak Verma remained unbeaten on 34 runs.
