Jos Buttler’s century against the Kolkata Knight Riders was a special innings for multiple reasons: it was his third century in an IPL run chase, the most by any batter; his eighth century overall in a successful chase, matching Babar Azam for the second spot. He scored 40 of Rajasthan’s 46 runs in the last three overs. It led to the joint-most successful chase in IPL history, and he achieved it all despite struggling with a leg injury.
The respect and admiration Buttler received at Eden Gardens, the opposition’s home ground, made clear the greatness of his performance on Tuesday – no numbers were needed to praise his knock.
Demonstrating remarkable grace and sportsmanship, KKR co-owner and Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan congratulated the Royals on their thrilling victory over his team. After Jos Buttler hit the winning runs, Khan was seen enthusiastically applauding. He embraced KKR and RR players in a heartfelt show of respect.
When Shah Rukh Khan saw Jos Buttler sitting on the ground, he approached the English cricketer. Buttler stood up to greet the Bollywood star, but Shah Rukh, in a display of gentlemanly conduct, asked him to remain seated before embracing him warmly.
Buttler, who injured sat out Rajasthan Royals’ previous match against Punjab Kings, orchestrated IPL’s biggest chase, overwhelming Kolkata Knight Riders’ massive 223. He scored an unbeaten 107 off just 60 balls, including the winning run on the very last ball of the match.
Buttler persevered through the struggle to walk as the game neared its end, refusing to give up.
“The key today was to keep believing, even when I was struggling to find my rhythm. There were moments of frustration and self-doubt, but I told myself it was okay – to keep going, stay calm, and my rhythm would return. Throughout the IPL, we’ve seen plenty of crazy things happen.” stated Buttler.
