Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman is set to replace Am Ghazanfar in the Mumbai Indians squad for the upcoming IPL 2025 due to his injury.
In the IPL mega auction, Mumbai Indians bought AM Ghazanfar for a price of INR 4.80 Crore.
The 18-year-old Ghazanfar who suffered a spine injury has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy he sustained during the Zimbabwe tour.
Afghanistan Board said that Ghazanfar had a “fracture in the L4 vertebra, specifically in the left pars interarticularis…and will be sidelined for a minimum of four months and will remain under treatment during this period.”
“Mumbai Indians wish Ghazanfar a speedy recovery and a wam welcome to Mujeeb into the #OneFamily,” said MI in a Statement.
Mujeeb who isn’t part of the Afghanistan’s Champions Trophy squad, had recently featured in the SA20 2025 and has also been part of T20I series against Zimbabwe.
He wasn’t considered for the selection as the committee decided him to focus on T20 upon doctor’s advice to ensure his phalanz sprain before returning to 50-over format.
According to Ahmad Suliman Khil, their interim chief selector, “he has been advised by his doctor to focus on T20s for a while to ensure his full recovery before returning to ODIs”.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman made his IPL debut for Punjab Kings in 2018 and played 18 games in three seasons. His last appearance in the tournament comes from 2021 season where he played only one game for Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Having played 256 T20 matches, he has 275 wickets in the format at an average of 23.67 and an economy of 6.75.
Recently, he was part of Paarl Royals in SA20 2025 season, where his side lost to Sunrisers Eastern Cape in Qualifier 02. He was the highest wicket taker for Royals in the tournament taking 14 wickets in 12 matches.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman went unsold during the IPL 2025 acution, but has joined the MI for a price of INR 2 Crore.
