After losing 6 of their first 7 matches, Royal Challengers Bengaluru‘s chances of making it to the IPL playoffs are virtually over. Though it is mathematically possible, there are hardly few teams, who have recovered from such a poor start to finish in the top 4. This is especially true for the luckless RCB. Their fortunes worsened in the previous game as Sunrisers Hyderabad belted a record 287 runs against them, the highest total in IPL history.
Amid RCB’s poor performance this season, Virat Kohli stands alone as a shining light. He is the current Orange Cap holder with 361 runs, including a quick 40 off 22 balls against Hyderabad in Bengaluru, Kohli continues to excel individually even as his team struggles. During SRH’s 25-run victory over RCB on Monday, Kohli could only watch as Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and Heinrich Klaasen tore through the RCB lineup.
Kohli displayed a spectrum of intense emotions throughout the match as his frustration mounted. He kicked the turf and yelled at teammates while watching his bowlers get hit around the field. Kohli’s face reflected the anguish of RCB’s narrow 25-run defeat, flashing looks of pain, disgust, disappointment, and sorrow despite his team coming close to victory.
As usual, Kohli made an earnest attempt to chase down 288. He went for boundaries right from the first ball to give RCB a blistering start alongside du Plessis. The pair notched 79 runs in the powerplay overs. However, the required run rate remained a steep 15 per over. He tried to smash leg-spinner Markande for a six, bUt missed the ball and was bowled for 42 off 20.
Despite not winning the IPL trophy once, Kohli has been the face of Bengaluru-based franchise. As the leading run-scorer in IPL history with the most centuries to his name, including a record-breaking 973 runs in 2016, Kohli has enjoyed individual success. However, the elation of captaining RCB to the title has escaped him after nine seasons at the helm. Kohli has ridden the highs and lows of the franchise. RCB came agonizingly close to winning the IPL trophy by reaching the finals in 2009, 2011, and 2016, but fell short each time.
