V.J. Joshitha, the Indian team member and all-rounder who led the country to victory in the U-19 Women's T20 World Cup, spoke to Mathrubhumi after her remarkable triumph.
Being a player who was raised at the Krishnagiri cricket academy in Wayanad, Joshitha's journey in cricket started with a humble beginning and culminated in representing India at the highest levels.
From Wayanad to the World Cup: A journey to remember
Reflecting on her journey, Joshitha talked about dreams she had since starting cricket training. "Joining the Indian team, playing in the World Cup, and lifting the trophy - that was my dream right from the start. It's been seven years since I started my training, and to have reached the Indian team and won the World Cup is a matter of great pride. My family, coaches, and my home state have always been with me. This success is theirs as much as mine," she said.
Celebrating the victory
When asked about the celebration following the World Cup victory, Joshitha recalled the emotional moment when the Indian flag was raised high. "I can't describe how it felt when we took to the ground with the Indian flag. The team felt like one big family, and our bond was evident in that moment. We celebrated together, it is indeed a great memory"
Support from team members
Joshitha attributed much of her success to the encouragement and support from her teammates throughout the tournament. "The confidence and support from my teammates, from the start of the World Cup, played a huge role in my performance. Our team was phenomenal, and Niki Prasad was a cool captain who led us with composure," she remarked.
Her journey also owes a great deal to her training at the Krishnagiri Cricket Academy and the Kerala Cricket Association, which played a pivotal role in shaping her career. "Coach Amal Babu, who brought me to Krishnagiri, and other figures like Nazir Machan, Reena Machan, and trainers like Justin Fernandes and T. Deepthi deserve special mention. There are many others whose support has been invaluable. This victory is dedicated to everyone who has been part of my journey," Joshitha added.
Favourite cricket player
Joshitha's favourite player is Bhuvneshwar Kumar, whose bowling style has inspired her. "I try to learn from the performances of cricketers like him. For instance, if a bowler concedes runs, I observe the changes they make in the next ball," she explained. She also looked up to local players like Minnu Mani and Sajna Sajeevan as role models who gave her the confidence to chase her dreams.
The next goal: Senior team selection
Looking ahead, Joshitha has set her sights on earning a spot in India's senior cricket team. "The upcoming Women's Premier League (WPL) matches are my next challenge. I'll be playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. I will work hard to perform well, and I hope that it will be my ticket to the senior team," she expressed with determination.
A glimpse of her roots
Joshitha, the daughter of Joshy and Sreeja, hailing from a village in Kalpetta, was the captain of the Kerala Under-19 Women's Cricket Team. She is currently a first-year student at St. Mary's College in Sulthan Bathery.
Her story is a testament to how dedication, hard work, and support can turn dreams into reality, inspiring many young girls across the nation to take up cricket and aim for the stars.
