England head coach Brendon McCullum recently addressed the concussion substitute controversy that arose during the fourth T20I against India at the MCA Stadium in Pune. The former New Zealand captain shared that while he spoke with match referee Javagal Srinath after the game, the conversation was calm and did not escalate into a heated debate.

The incident involved all-rounder Shivam Dube, who was deemed unfit to field after suffering a concussion while batting. In his place, pace bowler Harshit Rana was brought in as a substitute. However, since Rana wasn’t a like-for-like replacement, the decision sparked criticism from both former and current England cricketers. Rana played a key role in India’s 15-run victory, taking three wickets to help defend a total of 181.

“We politely disagreed with the decision made by Javagal (Srinath, the match referee) to allow a player with a different skill set to fill that role. I had a brief conversation with Javagal afterward. It was casual, with no strong emotions involved. We just wanted to understand how the decision was reached. We disagreed respectfully and moved forward.”

McCullum reflected on the situation, stating that England respectfully disagreed with the referee’s decision. England’s captain, Jos Buttler, echoed this sentiment at the post-match press conference, humorously pointing out that either Dube had suddenly increased his bowling speed by 25mph or Rana had dramatically improved his batting skills.

“I was somewhat surprised because my main concern was player welfare. Concussions are widely recognized in all sports now, and there’s a much greater understanding of how dangerous they can be, especially with bowlers reaching speeds of 90mph. Ultimately, the decision was made for him to play, and I trust that the Indian medical team was confident in that choice.”

Although England lost the five-match T20I series 4-1, they are now focused on the upcoming one-day series, which begins on February 6 in Nagpur.
