Team India’s ODI vice-captain Shubman Gill has refused to accept the critisism coming their way after the team’s defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The visiting team was thumped by a margin of 1-3 despite winning the series opener in Perth. The performance of the batters was ordinary, with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Gill disappointing the most. Shubman missed the first Test, while he was dropped from the fourth contest.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) acted against the players and issued new guidelines to curb indiscipline and unite all the players. The participation in the Ranji Trophy was made mandatory and the family time was limited to 14 days on a 45-day tour.
The cricketers were told to travel in a team bus and the seperate movement was banned. Former players were miffed with the display of the cricketers in Australia, with many predicting the end of Virat and Rohit’s careers. The supporters of the sub-continent team also voiced their anger.
Howeve, Gill is not bothered and reminded everyone about their past performances in Australia. He spoke to media before the first ODI against England on February 6 in Nagpur.
“One match and one day doesn’t define us, we won BGT in Australia twice before and also won a World Cup (2024). We reached the final of a World Cup (2023), so we should keep all those things in mind,” he said.
“Definitely, we did not play as per our expectations in the Australian series, but still we played some good cricket. We were unfortunate not to have Bumrah on the last day & we would have won the match & the series would have been a draw & this talk wouldn’t have happened,” he added.
