Delhi: The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) is the most prestigious tournament of Test cricket, which was started with the aim of promoting this format. So far, two editions have been played, in which New Zealand and Australia have won the title once. Now the third final of WTC is to be played, where Australia and South Africa will be face to face. However, the current WTC format may also end with this final, as there are reports that the International Cricket Council (ICC) is considering implementing the two-tier system.
To make Test cricket more exciting and competitive, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) President Richard Thompson recently met ICC Chairman Jai Shah. England have to play a series against India in Headingley from June 20, which will begin the next cycle of WTC. Thompson believes that the current format needs to be improved and he has only five months to consider it.
Thompson said in a conversation with 'Telegraph Sport' that the current WTC structure is not working effectively. Therefore, it needs to be improved to make it more fair and competitive. However, no concrete recommendations have been revealed at the moment, but it will be decided soon. He believes that WTC should be designed in such a way that the best teams reached the finals and other countries should also be inspired to play Test cricket.
The WTC format has been criticized a lot, as the teams do not play against all the opposing teams in the two -year cycle. Apart from this, the points table does not have continuity in the points table. India and Pakistan do not play Tests among themselves due to political reasons, while in the current cycle, South Africa made it to the finals without playing any Test from Australia. However, both these teams will now play the final in Lord's in June.
If the ICC implements the two-tier system, this test will begin the new era of cricket, which can make the WTC more competitive and balanced.
