West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell created history in Match 27 of the DP World ILT20 on Saturday, February 1. Playing for Abu Dhabi Knight Riders, Russell became the fastest player to reach 9000 runs in T20 cricket as far as balls faced is concerned.
The West Indian achieved the feat in 5321 balls in the game against Gulf Giants when he hit Tom Curran for a four. Meanwhile, Russell's innings just lasted six balls in which he scored only nine runs.
The Jamaica-born beat the record of Glenn Maxwell who had reached the same milestone in 5915 balls. The players to follow the duo on the list are AB de Villiers (5985 balls), Kieron Pollard (5988 balls), Chris Gayle (6007 balls) and Alex Hales (6175 balls) respectively.
When it comes to scoring the most runs in T20 cricket, Russell is 25th on the chart. He has 9004 runs to his name from 536 matches at an average of 26.79 and a healthy strike rate of 169.15. The 36-year-old has 31 fifties and two hundreds in his kitty. Meanwhile, his compatriot Chris Gayle leads the list with 14,562 runs from 463 matches.
Russell is a powerful force with the ball too. His medium-fast bowling has allowed him to scalp 466 wickets at an average of 25.55 and an economy rate of 8.71. Though the West Indian has not retired from international cricket he mostly plies his trade for franchise teams nowadays.
Russell's numbers in DP World T20 2025
The all-rounder has had average outings, by his lofty standards, in this edition of the DP World ILT20. He has scored 130 runs from nine innings at a strike rate of 158.53, smashing seven fours and 12 sixes. On the bowling front, Russell has two wickets from three innings at a poor economy rate of 11.42.
Meanwhile, the Knight Riders are languishing at the bottom of the table, fighting for a knockout berth. They would want other results to go their way as well in order to have a chance of qualification. Abu Dhabi play their last league match against Dubai Capitals on Sunday, February 2 at the Dubai International Stadium, Dubai.
