Although MS Dhoni has long since retired from international cricket, he remains one of the most popular cricketers in India and possibly even the world. His popularity surpasses that of modern-day stars like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson. Under Dhoni’s leadership, India won the 2007 World T20, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy, making him the only captain to win all three major ICC limited-overs tournaments.

Dhoni’s decision not to enter politics might stem from his preference for staying out of the spotlight. It is well-known that Dhoni does not carry a personal mobile phone, and even his former teammates and colleagues must contact him through his agent.

Recently, Rajeev Shukla, BCCI vice-president, spoke about Dhoni’s potential in politics. In an interview with BeerBiceps on YouTube, Shukla suggested that Dhoni “could become a good politician.”

“I think Dhoni could have a successful political career,” he said.

““Ultimately, it’s his decision whether he wants to pursue that route. I always thought Sourav would venture into Bengal politics, and Dhoni could do well too. His popularity would help him win easily.”

“I’m not sure if he will pursue politics—it’s entirely his decision,” he added.

The politician also shared an intriguing conversation with Dhoni when rumors about him running for elections were circulating. “I once asked him about the rumors of him contesting for a Lok Sabha seat, and he quickly dismissed it saying, ‘No, no, no,’” he recalled.

When discussing Dhoni’s reluctance to enter politics, Shukla attributed it to his preference for staying out of the limelight. “He has this nature of avoiding the spotlight—he doesn’t even carry a mobile phone. It was actually difficult for the BCCI selectors to reach him because of that,” he explained.

“It’s just in his nature to shy away from fame. He’s not someone who seeks attention.”

“He’s not a recluse, though. When he does something, he does it seriously, with great dedication,” he added.

Despite speculation, Dhoni’s reluctance to enter politics is likely due to his ongoing IPL career with Chennai Super Kings. Although he no longer officially captains CSK, his influence within the team remains strong. With his retention for IPL 2025 and no retirement announcement, politics seems a distant prospect for now.
