Varun Chakravarthy‘s return to the Indian team has been nothing short of remarkable. He made his comeback during India’s tour of South Africa, where the team played four T20Is. Varun impressed with his exceptional bowling, claiming 12 wickets and leaving the hosts in trouble. He continued his brilliant form in the T20I series against England, taking 10 wickets in three matches at an outstanding average of 8.50.
One of his standout performances was a spell of 5-24 in the third T20I, which was the second-best of his career. It’s rare for a bowler to deliver such an incredible spell and still end up on the losing side, but Varun has been unfortunate in that respect, with India losing both matches where he took a five-wicket haul. His first fifer in T20Is came in the second match against South Africa, where he bowled a stunning 5-17 in four overs, but India still lost. As a result, Varun became the first bowler in history to end up on the losing side twice after taking five-wicket hauls.
In the third T20I against England, Varun’s excellent spell helped restrict the opposition to 171-9. However, India’s batters failed to chase down a fairly modest target, and England won by 26 runs. This marked the second consecutive match where the Indian batters fell short of expectations, though Tilak Varma’s brilliant innings in the second T20I had been a rare highlight.
Despite his stellar performances, Varun remains focused on improving. While he acknowledged his recent success, he expressed that he is not content and aims to continue getting better in upcoming matches.
When you’re representing your country, taking responsibility is crucial, and I try to do that as much as I can. I don’t mind bowling just one over at a time because there have been occasions where I’ve bowled four consecutive overs. I’m prepared for whatever comes my way. I’m also working on my flipper, and it’s coming along nicely. As I mentioned in the last game, while I may have bowled well, there’s always room for improvement as I move forward,” Varun said during the post-match presentation
