Australia opener Travis Head was seen at his aggressive best as he scored a blistering 40-ball 57 on Day 1 of the first Test against Sri Lanka on Wednesday, January 29 at Galle International Stadium, Galle.

Head was promoted to open the innings after 22 months as the team management dropped youngster Sam Konstas from the Playing XI and handed debut cap to Josh Inglis.

Despite , Head showed no qualms whatsoever as he smashed a boundary on the very second ball of his innings as Asitha Fernando gave him a freebie on his pads. Having got off the mark with a boundary, Head quickly got into rhythm and hit two more fours in the over, giving ominous signs to the Sri Lankan bowlers.

The Australian opener was in no mood to stay quiet at the crease and continued to take on Fernando, whacking him for two boundaries in his third over. The Sri Lankan seamer managed to hit him on his pads on the last ball of the over and went up for an appeal for lbw. However, the umpire turned it due to the possibility of ball pitching outside the leg stump, since Fernando was bowling over the wicket.

Head survives as Sri Lanka opts against DRS

The Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva also wasn't too keen to go for DRS and decided against it.

Much to his dismay, the ball tracking showed that the ball was pitching in line and Head would've had to return to the pavilion, had they opted for a review. As a result, the southpaw continued his stay at the crease as Sri Lankan bowlers had nowhere to hide from his belligerent strokeplay.

Head showed no mercy to the bowlers, hitting both spinners and seamers to all corners of the ground and brought up his half century off just 35 balls. He was dismissed shortly after completing his fifty while trying to smash Jayasuriya down the ground but could only find Dinesh Chandimal at long on.

Hence, Head had to return to the pavilion after scoring 57 off 40 with the help of ten fours and a six as he added 92 runs for the first wicket with Usman Khawaja.
