India's ace fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah's fitness remains a major concern ahead of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, with his participation hanging in the balance.

Bumrah sustained a back injury during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia.

He is now set to be assessed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Rowan Schouten in New Zealand. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely monitoring his progress, and a decision regarding his fitness is expected soon.

Bumrah's Injury Evaluation and Uncertain Timeline

Bumrah, named in India's squad for the upcoming ODI series against England, missed the second innings of the Sydney Test due to discomfort in his back. Following the injury, the BCCI medical team implemented a three-week offloading period.

During this time he was advised to refrain from strenuous physical activity. Reports from this recovery phase have been sent to Dr. Schouten for evaluation, and based on his feedback, a visit to New Zealand for further consultation could be arranged.

A source close to the BCCI told Times of India, "The selectors know it will be a miracle if Bumrah turns up 100% fit in the given timeline." With the Champions Trophy just weeks away, selectors have until February 11 to make changes to the squad if needed.

Given the uncertainty surrounding Bumrah's recovery, the Indian selectors are considering alternative options. Harshit Rana has been included in the squad for the first two ODIs against England, and selectors may continue with him if Bumrah fails to regain full fitness.

Additionally, seasoned pacer Mohammed Siraj, who was omitted from the original Champions Trophy squad, could be recalled to bolster India's pace attack. The BCCI remains cautious with Bumrah's recovery, mindful of the risks of rushing him back. His premature return from a similar injury in 2022 led to a breakdown before the T20 World Cup.

The team management is keen to avoid such a mistake this time. As India awaits the final verdict on Bumrah's fitness, the team management is prepared for all scenarios. The selectors and the medical team are taking a long-term approach, considering his significance for crucial future assignments, including the England tour in June.
