Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has defended the selection of 24-year-old Dhruv Jurel in India's T20I playing XI, despite the youngster's recent struggles.
Jurel has faced criticism following his underwhelming performances in the ongoing T20I series against England, with many questioning his place in the squad.
Jurel has featured in three T20Is so far, scoring just 10 runs, including a disappointing .Critics have pointed out his lack of impact, with fans on social media suggesting Ruturaj Gaikwad as a potential replacement. However, Chopra, speaking on his YouTube channel, highlighted Jurel's potential and the need for patience, stating that his selection was justified due to India's requirement for an additional wicketkeeper-batter. Chopra also stressed that it would be unfair to pass judgment on Jurel's career so early.
"Dhruv Jurel has been picked because you need a second wicketkeeper in the team. It's a five-match series, so you really want a second keeper. He has been picked because of one word, and that is potential. I don't mind it," Chopra said.
"Questions might be asked many times by comparing players' performances. However, in the end, as a selector, you need to see the potential. You need to take a brave call at times, for which you might be criticized occasionally," he added.
Dhruv Jurel's India career so far
Jurel first made waves with , playing a crucial role in India's middle order. His performances included a notable 49-run knock in Rajkot, followed by scores of 90 and an unbeaten 39 in Ranchi. However, his form dipped during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, where he managed just 11 and 1 runs in the Perth Test.
He made his T20I debut during India's series against Zimbabwe, where he could only score 6 runs. Transitioning into the T20I setup, Jurel has been assigned a middle-order role, while Sanju Samson has taken on wicketkeeping duties. Despite his modest returns so far, Jurel is seen as a promising talent in Indian cricket.
Chopra's backing underlines the importance of nurturing young players and giving them time to adapt to the demands of international cricket. Jurel's journey highlights the challenges faced by emerging talents as they navigate the transition from domestic success to the global stage.
As India continues its T20I series against England, all eyes will be on Jurel to see if he can rise to the occasion and validate the faith shown in him by the selectors and his supporters.
