Former India cricketer turned commentator Sanjay Manjrekar feels legendary South Africa batter AB de Villiers played for the wrong team in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

De Villiers had a 13-year-long career in the IPL where he played for two teams, namely Delhi Capitals (former Delhi Daredevils) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

He's counted among one of the greatest players to have played in the tournament, being the seventh-highest run scorer. De Villiers scored 5162 runs in his IPL career from 184 matches (170 innings) at an average of 39.70 and a strike rate of 151.68 with three hundreds and 40 fifties.

Recently, Sanjay Manjrekar was asked whether Suryakumar Yadav has eclipsed AB de Villiers as Mr 360 and the former India batter agreed with the statement mentioning Suryakumar's match-winning impact.

"I'll say yes, because of the match-winning impact. AB was incredible. But AB's greatness was that he averaged 50 in Tests. Even in one day (ODIs). So, he's an amazing player. But only if you look at T20 cricket; I've seen both of them a lot," said Manjrekar on Star Sports.

Furthermore, Manjrekar went on to say that and should've batted a little higher. He also said that he played for the wrong franchise in the tournament.

"AB, in IPL, he was not used properly. His real ability. So, in IPL we didn't get that much juice out of him. Definitely (batted higher). And, sorry to say, but played for the wrong franchise. If he had played elsewhere, we could have seen the greatness of AB de Villiers," he added.

De Villiers retired from IPL without winning the trophy

De Villiers played the majority of his IPL career for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) from 2011 till his retirement in 2021. He played several memorable knocks for the franchise, setting the tournament ablaze with his breathtaking 360-degree strokeplay. However, despite having an illustrious career in the T20 extravaganza with the bat, an IPL title eluded the Proteas legend.

He appeared in two finals with RC . Hence, De Villiers couldn't cap off his legendary IPL career with a trophy in his cabinet.
