Delhi: Former Australia captain Ian Chappell has addressed the International Cricket Council (ICC) as an “event management company”. He believes that a two-tier system (where small and big teams play separately) should have been implemented earlier for Test cricket.
Chappell wrote in his column in ESPN Cricinfo, “Former West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding had said on the two-tier test system that FIFA, for all its faults, governs football, while the ICC should govern cricket. But, ICC does not govern cricket.”
He further said, “India contributes almost 70 percent of the income of cricket (BCCI) and its strong presence in ICC is due to this contribution. This is a complex issue, the solution to which cricket has not found yet. “The two-tier Test system should have been implemented much earlier as only a few teams are eligible to play in the five-day format.”
Chappell also said that countries like Afghanistan and Ireland should not have been given Test status, but this step was taken. He said, “By giving Test status to these countries, the ICC gets their votes, and hence this decision was taken. For this reason ICC is considered as an event management company.”
