A major controversy unfolded on Day 2 of the ongoing Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. Mumbai batter Shreyas Iyer was controversially given not out despite a clear edge to the keeper. The incident took place on the second ball of the 19th over during Mumbai’s innings at the Bandra Kurla Complex Cricket Ground. Iyer attempted to drive pacer Umar Nazir through the covers but mistimed his shot. The ball went straight to keeper Kanhaiya Wadhawan, but there was a loud noise as it passed Iyer’s bat. Nazir and Wadhawan immediately appealed, celebrating before the umpire made any decision.

Since this was a group-stage game, Jammu and Kashmir could not utilize the Decision Review System (DRS). The bowling team was left in disbelief as the sound of the ball hitting the bat was clearly audible, which was later confirmed in the replays. This led to a lot of questions regarding the umpire’s decision.

Iyer, however, didn’t last long after that and was dismissed 11 balls later by Auqib Nabi. His wicket left Mumbai at 86-4, and four balls later, Shivam Dube was dismissed, leaving them struggling at 86-5 by lunch, with the scores level.

Iyer, a member of India’s squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy, had earlier scored 11 runs off 7 balls in his brief stay during the first innings. As Mumbai’s specialist batters continued to fall, India veteran Shardul Thakur stepped up. He followed up his first-innings 51 with another resilient half-century in the second innings. His innings, along with Tanush Kotian’s support, helped Mumbai recover from a tough position. In the first innings, Mumbai were bowled out for just 120 runs. Jammu and Kashmir took a strong lead with 206, gaining an advantage of 86 runs.
