The second phase of the league stage in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season has started, in which star players like Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill have grabbed all the headlines. These veterans of Team India had to return to Ranji Trophy on the instructions of BCCI. While everyone's attention was focused on these famous players, a 16 year old child made an amazing record. The name of this boy is Ankit Chatterjee, who broke the record of veteran batsman and former captain Sourav Ganguly.

The group stage of Ranji Trophy returned from Thursday 23 January and the teams of Bengal and Haryana were face to face in Kalyani, West Bengal. Bengal bowlers wreaked havoc on the very first day and bowled out Haryana for just 157 runs in the first innings. Before this miracle of Bengal bowlers, Ankit Chatterjee made a special record. In fact, as soon as he stepped on the field, Ankit became the youngest player to play first class cricket for Bengal.

Ganguly's 35 year old record broken

Ankit, who played the role of opening batsman, was only 15 years and 361 days old on 23 January 2025, when he achieved this feat. He broke the record of Bengal's greatest batsman and former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly made his debut 35 years ago at the age of 17 in the 1990 Ranji Trophy final and along with making a record, he was also a part of Bengal's title win. Now Ankit broke his record. The special thing is that Ankit did this feat just before his birthday (January 27).

However, on the first day of his debut match, Ankit did not get much batting time because after the end of Haryana's innings, Bengal did not get much batting time in its first innings. However, during this time Ankit hit an excellent four but by then it was time for stumps. Now he will come on the second day to take his innings forward.

Amazing performance in junior cricket

Ankit is currently studying in class 10th in a school in Bengal. He recently impressed everyone with his performance in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy. During this period he had scored 376 runs at an average of 42. Apart from this, similar runs were scored with his bat in the Cooch Behar Trophy in 2024, where he scored 325 runs at an average of 41.
