Ankit Bawne, the Maharashtra batter, has been banned from one-match in the Ranji Trophy competition for showing dissent at an on-field umpire's decision ahead of their Group A clash of the 2024-25 season against Baroda at the Hutatma Anant Kanhere Maidan in Nashik.

The ruling was communicated to the Maharashtra Ranji Trophy team before their ongoing sixth-round match in the competition, which has depleted their playing XI versus the opposition who are at the top of the group standings.

Notably, the ban was handed to Ankit Bawne for his refusal to walk back to the pavilion after being given out by the on-field umpire during Maharashtra's fifth round clash in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 against Services over two-and-half months ago at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune. The matter of contention was about the catch taken by Shubham Rohilla of Services at slip, which appeared to have bounced in front of him, on the bowling of left-arm spinner Amit Shukla.

When there are blunders of this nature, the anger is justified: Maharashtra head coach

Ankit Bawne wasn't able to review the decision since the match was live streamed and not live on television, which led to non-availability of the DRS, according to a report from ESPNcricinfo. It made the stand-in captain of Maharashtra to not leave the field of play, forcing the game to be suspended for around 15 minutes before the intervention of match referee Amit Sharma and Maharashtra head coach Sulakshan Kulkarni helped it restart.

In the aftermath of the incident, Sulakshan Kulkarni wasn't pleased about the standard of the umpiring in domestic cricket in India, justifying the anger of Ankit Bawne in the process. He was quoted as saying, 'Players are subject to fines and reprimand, what about proper assessment of umpires. Why do the same erring umpires continue to officiate and play spoilsport? When there are blunders of this nature, the anger is justified.'
