Varun Chakravarthy has decided to give himself moderate marks after a scintillating outing in the first T20I against England on Wednesday (January 22).

In a thrilling encounter at the Eden Gardens, India triumphed over England by 7 wickets, thanks to an exceptional bowling performance by Varun Chakravarthy.

The mystery spinner, who was named Player of the Match, delivered a match-winning spell that saw him claim three crucial wickets, including those of Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone. His performance not only stifled the English chase but also reaffirmed his status as a vital cog in India's T20 setup.

Reflecting on his performance, Chakravarthy spoke candidly about the challenges of bowling at the iconic Eden Gardens.

"I am used to seeing such pitches in the IPL. I know that it is for the seamers but I know there are certain lengths which are helpful for me," he said at the post-match presentation.

Chakravarthy's ability to read the pitch and adjust his lengths proved crucial on a surface that seemed more favorable for seamers. His spell was marked by precision and guile, and his dismissal of Brook and Livingstone at critical junctures turned the game in India's favor.

Speaking about his approach in the high-pressure final over, Chakravarthy remarked, "The last over was very tricky and challenging, but by God's grace I was successful." Despite the pressure, his calm demeanor and clarity of thought ensured he delivered when it mattered most.

"What I realised was, I can't beat batsmen with side-spin. The only way I can beat the batsmen is through bounce," he shared.

However, Chakravarthy is not one to rest on his laurels. "I'm still 7 on 10, still more work to do," he humbly admitted.

Why is Varun Chakravarthy rating himself Low?

Varun Chakravarthy probably wants no complacency within himself. The mystery spinner has been excellent in the past few months for India and would be desperate to continue his good deeds in the T20I format. The player wants to preserve his focus on the game and would be keen in moving forward with the positive momentum. This is also the longest run for Varun in the Indian team albeit in the T20I format, but the player's self-assessment shows his will for improvement.
