Mumbai captain Ajinkya Rahane has shown faith in Rohit Sharma, backing the out-of-form batter to bounce back from his recent struggles. Rahane also expressed his excitement at having the Indian skipper in the Mumbai lineup for their upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled to begin on January 23. This appearance marks Rohit’s first Ranji Trophy game since November 2015.

The 37-year-old has faced significant challenges in red-ball cricket, averaging a mere 6.20 during the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. Over his last 15 Test innings, Rohit has managed to score only 164 runs at an average of under 11, with just one half-century to his name.

“Rohit is Rohit; we all know that. His personality is no secret to anyone,” Rahane said, adding, “I’m really happy to have both players back in the Mumbai dressing room. Rohit has always been calm and composed. Even at the international level, his demeanor remains the same.”

Rahane emphasized Rohit’s relaxed approach to the game. “His attitude has always been laid-back in the best way possible. He understands his game so well that no one needs to guide him on what to do. Once he settles in, I’m confident he’ll perform exceptionally. His consistency in character over the years is a great quality,” he added.

While Rohit has retired from India’s T20I squad, which is preparing to face England at home, he is expected to return as captain for the ODI series starting February 6. Rahane emphasized the importance of Rohit’s presence in the Mumbai squad, expressing confidence that the experienced batter will find his rhythm soon.

Speaking to the media ahead of Mumbai’s crucial encounter, Rahane shared that Rohit might only participate in this round of the Ranji Trophy and could miss Mumbai’s final group-stage game against Meghalaya. The final group match is set to be played from January 30 to February 2.

Speaking about Rohit’s involvement in the upcoming matches, Rahane remarked, “I think he’s only playing this match, not sure about the next one. His inputs during the next four days will be crucial. What truly stands out is his hunger and determination to succeed. Once he gets going, I believe he will score big. He practiced well during yesterday’s sessions, and I’m confident he’ll deliver. These moments are part of every player’s career.”
