The evening of Sunday 19 January proved to be wonderful for Indian sports. In the first Kho Kho World Cup being played in New Delhi, the Indian women's team created history and won the title. The young Indian team, captained by Priyanka Ingale, defeated Nepal very easily in the final and became the first world champion of Kho Kho. But as soon as the Indian team won the title, soon after that the fans got a shock. Nasreen Shaikh, one of the biggest players of the Indian team and former captain, announced her retirement.
In the final of Kho Kho World Cup played at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Sunday, India defeated Nepal with the scoreline of 78-40 and became the world champion. Nasreen Shaikh, one of the senior players who played an important role in the victory of the Indian team, surprised everyone by announcing her retirement as soon as she became the world champion. This announcement of Nasreen is shocking because she is still only 26 years old.
Nasreen, a resident of Shakurpur, Delhi, has been leading India in this sport for the last several years. It was under his captaincy that the Indian team won the gold medal in the 2019 South Asian Games. Nasreen, one of India's best players, was awarded the Arjuna Award, the country's second highest sports award, in 2024. She became only the second Kho Kho player to win the Arjuna Award.
Nasreen, one of 6 sisters and 4 brothers, also made her mark in Ultimate Kho Kho. Not only this, he is posted in the Mumbai office of the Income Tax Department. However, at the moment it is not clear why Nasreen retired so soon because after the successful organization of the first Kho Kho World Cup, the hope of this tournament being played continuously in the coming years has increased.
As far as Team India is concerned, the dominance of the Indian team was seen in the final. The Indian women's team won all its matches in a one-sided manner throughout the tournament and the same trend continued in the finals as well. The Indian team had taken a lead of 34-0 in the first turn itself, after which Nepal made a comeback in the second turn and the score became 35-24. In the third turn, India took the match out of Nepal's reach by increasing the score to 73-24 and in the end the team won the title by 78-40.
