The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is all set to proceed with the first edition of the Women's Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL), which will kickstart from February 8 to 15, 2025, following the completion of the existing men's Bangladesh Premier League. The event will feature three teams, with each facing the other twice in six league matches before the final.

Nazmul Abedin, chairman of the BCB women's wing, informed the media in Sylhet that the tournament will begin with three teams this year.

"The plan is to conduct the WBPL with three teams," Abedin said. He further explained that the league will kickstart with three teams for some thrilling action. 'To organize a quality tournament, you need a sufficient pool of talented players. Expanding beyond three teams would dilute the quality. Although we considered four teams, we decided this format was more feasible," he added.

Goal is to uplift the overall standard of Women's cricket in Bangladesh: Nazmul Abedin

Abedin assured that the Women's BPL would be unaffected by financial difficulties that had previously damaged the men's BPL. He addressed recent concerns concerning unpaid pay in the men's BPL, claiming that thorough planning and management will prevent such problems in the women's competition. "Our focus is not just on hosting a tournament for financial gains but on improving the standard of women's cricket. A three-team competition will be more competitive," he said. The BCB is also focusing on including only one overseas player in each playing XI for the WBPL due to financial constraints.

The renowned Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur will host all of the Women's Bangladesh Premier League matches in 2025. Each side will have 15 local players, with one foreign player included in each starting XI, to add diversity to the tournament. Discussions with franchises have already been held, and there is a strong desire for participation.
