The Indian team has been announced for the Champions Trophy to be hosted by Pakistan from 19th February. On Saturday, January 18, Captain Rohit Sharma and Chief Selector announced the 15-member squad of Team India. The press conference for this was to be held at around 12.30 pm, but it was delayed by 2.5 hours. Now it has come to light that the main reason for this delay was the name of the vice-captain, for which there was a debate between the selectors, the Indian captain and the team's head coach Gautam Gambhir. During this, Rohit again played with Pandya.
According to media reports, almost all the names of the squad for the Champions Trophy had already been decided. But the needle was stuck regarding the vice-captaincy. A meeting of the selection committee was held for this. Head coach Gautam Gambhir, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar and Indian captain Rohit Sharma also participated in it.
Gambhir wanted to make Pandya the vice-captain, but Rohit was not in favor of it. He and Agarkar wanted to hand over the responsibility to Shubhman Gill. This was discussed for a long time. In the end Gambhir had to accept defeat and Gill's name was sealed.
This is not the first time this game has happened with Pandya. There was a lot of debate at the time of handing over the T20 captaincy before the ODI. Hardik Pandya used to be the vice-captain of the team during the T20 World Cup and before that. Therefore, after Rohit's retirement from T20, it was considered certain that he would become the captain. Even at that time, Rohit was adamant on making Suryakumar Yadav the captain in place of Pandya.
The influence of Rohit and Agarkar was so much that in the end everyone had to bow down and Surya got the captaincy. Pandya was stripped of his vice-captaincy and Gill was made the vice-captain. Let us tell you that Pandya is playing ODI for the first time after October 2023. Before this he was the vice-captain of the team. But now this post has been taken away from him.
Apart from the vice-captaincy, there was also a dilemma regarding the second wicketkeeper. Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson were the two contenders for the tournament. Head coach Gambhir, who has scored 3 centuries in T20, wanted to take Samson to the Champions Trophy. Whereas Ajit Agarkar and Rohit Sharma were in favor of selecting Pant. There was a lot of discussion on this. Here too Gambhir's advice was not accepted and Pant was selected as the second wicketkeeper in place of Samson.
