The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is actively considering appointing a dedicated batting coach to address the team's recent struggles in the Test format.
While no official decision has been made, discussions have centred around bringing in an expert who can provide technical guidance for batters across the globe. Among the names being floated are some of India's finest former cricketers who have the credentials and experience to make a significant impact on the team's performance.
India's poor performance against New Zealand followed by the dismal series loss in Australia have raised questions about the current role of assistant coaches. Head coach Gautam Gambhir has Abhishek Nayar as assistant, but the repeated way of dismissals from top batters such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has warranted the introduction of a new batting coach, who may be able to address the issue.
Although nothing is confirmed yet, here are a few names who can be roped in for the role, which may be implemented as early as the Champions Trophy.
Virender Sehwag
Virender Sehwag, known for his explosive batting style and fearless approach, could bring a refreshing perspective to the Indian team's batting lineup. His vast experience across formats, coupled with his success on both Indian and overseas pitches, would be particularly beneficial for openers and middle-order players who need to balance aggression with stability.
Yuvraj Singh
Yuvraj Singh, one of India's most celebrated all-rounders and a key player in multiple ICC tournament victories, has the ability to guide batters in high-pressure situations. Yuvraj's expertise in pacing an innings and thriving under challenging circumstances could be invaluable.
Vikram Rathour
Vikram Rathour remains a strong candidate to be reintroduced in the role. With his deep understanding of the modern game and familiarity with the team, Rathour has been instrumental in working closely with key players like Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer. While India's recent batting performances have come under scrutiny, Rathour's experience and rapport with the players could ensure consistency and continuity as the team looks to bounce back. He was part of coaching staff during Rahul Dravid's tenure and can play a similar role again, despite his IPL commitments with Rajasthan Royals.
Sanjay Bangar
Sanjay Bangar, who previously served as India's batting coach, is another contender for the position. His tenure between 2014 and 2019 saw significant improvements in India's batting, especially in challenging overseas conditions. Bangar's ability to identify technical flaws and tailor solutions for individual players earned him immense respect during his stint.
Sachin Tendulkar
The prospect of having Sachin Tendulkar as the batting coach is both exciting and transformative. Although Tendulkar has largely refrained from full-time coaching roles, his unparalleled experience and cricketing wisdom make him a dream choice. Even in a consulting capacity, his presence in the dressing room could uplift the team's morale and set the foundation for long-term success.
