James Vince, who has played 13 Tests, 25 ODIs and 17 T20 Internationals for England, was also surprised and upset. There was a respectful silence at the MCG as a desperate security guard picked up Seagull from the field.
However, this is not the first time this has happened in sports and even in cricket matches, such examples exist. Let's see some of the most famous such stories:
When Jacques Rudolph killed a pigeon: South African cricketer Jacques Rudolph, while fielding in a T20 match, threw the ball at a fellow cricketer and it accidentally hit a pigeon, killing him. This is from June 2009. Rudolf himself picked up the lifeless bird from the pitch and placed it across the boundary. This is the story of a match between Lancashire and Yorkshire at Headingley, Leeds, and Rudolph was throwing towards the Yorkshire wicketkeeper when the ball was hit by a pigeon about 40 feet above the ground.
Story of July 1936: This is the most famous and historical. Indian fast bowler Jahangir Khan was playing for Cambridge against MCC at Lord's. He was bowling to Tom Pierce who played a defensive shot. Then it was discovered that the bales had fallen and a sparrow was lying dead near the stump. It was believed that she was struck by the ball while flying and died. Since this incident happened at Lord's, it was discussed a lot and hence a memento of that bird was made and displayed in the memorial gallery of Lord's. Since then it has become one of the most talked about and most visited artworks on display at Lord's.
Accusations against Kapil Dev: During the Australian tour of 1986, this top Indian cricketer was accused by Australian newspapers of committing the crime of killing a big seagull. In that tour, there was a lot of tension going on between the Indian and Australian players and the Australian players also jumped into this matter and wanted to put pressure on Kapil Dev by accusing him of killing the 'Big Kangaroo Seagull'. What's more, when Kapil Dev asked for a break to drink water after this incident, captain Alan Border flatly refused to give such a break and asked Kapil Dev to continue the game.
Ajay Jadeja's story from the World Cup in which two birds died: This is about the 1999 World Cup in which the ball hit the edge of Jadeja's bat and directly hit a pigeon. He died on the spot. Then it was published in the newspapers that Ajay Jadeja had killed two people during India's shameful defeat. Although Jadeja scored 100, but could not save India from being out of the tournament. India got a big target of 282 runs against Australia and when Jadeja came to bat, the score was 10/2. Even Jadeja's 100 did not save India and they lost by 77 runs. Two pigeons died during Jadeja's innings. The first one died after being hit in the air by Jadeja's hook, while the second one fell victim to Paul Reiffel's throw. While trying to run out Jadeja, he threw the ball on the stump and the ball hit the pigeon. Two pigeons lost their lives in this Indian defeat.
