Shreyas Iyer was named captain of Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Sunday ahead of the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

The 30-year-old was bought for Rs. 26.75 crore during the IPL mega-auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in November last year.

“I am honoured that the team has reposed its faith in me. I am looking forward to working again with coach Ponting. The team looks strong, with a great mix of potential and proven performers. I hope to repay the faith shown by the management to deliver our maiden title,” said the Indian batter.

Shreyas, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Shashank Singh visited the sets of Bigg Boss 18, during which Shreyas was officially announced the Punjab Kings captain for IPL 2025.

Shreyas led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to its third title after defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in a low-scoring final held at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai in May 2024.

However, Shreyas was released by KKR ahead of the mega-auction and became the second-most expensive player in the history of the tournament.

He began his captaincy journey back in 2018, leading then Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), replacing Gautam Gambhir. He is the only captain in the history of the league to lead two teams into the IPL final – he had guided the Capitals to the final in 2020.

Shreyas also led Mumbai to the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) last year.
