Rohit Sharma was all set to announce his retirement from Test cricket after the fourth contest against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but some well wishers forced him to change his mind. He batted in the middle order in the second and third Tests but returned to open the innings in the Boxing Day Test, forcing the team management to leave out Shubman Gill. Even this move didn’t help as he failed to get going and the team lost the game by 184 runs.
“Rohit Sharma had decided to call it a day after the fourth Test but his well wishers intervered and the veteran changed his mind. We could have seen another player taking retirement in Australia,” a source told TOI.
With just 31 runs in five innings in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, Rohit was sure that his time was over. However, a change of heart was not liked by head coach Gautam Gambhir. Gautam’s statement before the final Test almost confirmed Rohit’s likely departure from the longest format but the 38-year-old revealed that he is not retiring during his interview with the official broadcasting channel.
According to him, he opted out of the Sydney Test for the betterment of the Indian team.
