Like the Indian Premier League, many new and young players are making their mark in South Africa's T20 league SA20. Some such new talents were seen in the first two seasons of the league and now at the beginning of the third season itself, the wonders of a young player have been seen. This player is 18 year old Luan Dre Pretorius, who presented such explosive batting in his debut match in this league that even big bowlers got worried. Although he was out just 3 runs before his century, he won everyone's heart with his batting.
In the match played between Paarl Royals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape, all eyes were on veteran wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik, who became the first Indian player to play in this league. But Karthik did not get a chance to show his magic because his young partner Pretorius ensured the victory with a wonderful innings. In response to the target of 176 runs set by Sunrisers, this left-handed opener, who came to open for Paarl, started batting furiously as soon as he arrived. England's legendary batsman Joe Root was also with him and like Pretorius, he was also making his debut in this league. Yet this superstar batsman was robbed by an unknown 18 year old batsman.
Pretorius definitely got a lease of life once at the score of 32 runs but after that he thrashed the Sunrisers bowlers badly. This batsman completed his half-century in 31 balls but after this his attitude became more sharp. Pretorius, along with Root, took the team beyond 130 runs in the 13th over itself. It was here that he was close to his century but was out LBW on an excellent ball from Marco Janson. Nevertheless, this batsman made his debut memorable by playing a brilliant inning of 97 runs in just 51 balls. In this innings, Pretorius also hit 10 fours and 6 sixes.
On Saturday 11 January, the Paarl Royals team played its first match in the third match of the third season of SA20. In front of him was Sunrisers Eastern Cape, the champion two times in a row. Batting first, Sunrisers scored 175 runs thanks to captain Aiden Markram's 82 runs. This score did not prove to be much for Paarl and on the basis of Pretorius' innings, they won the match by 9 wickets in the 19th over. Apart from Pretorius, the other debutant Joe Root also impressed and returned unbeaten after scoring 62 runs in 44 balls.
