Delhi: After the Border Gavaskar Trophy, everyone's attention is on India's upcoming white-ball series. After the ODI and T20 series against England, India's next big target will be the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. After winning the title in T20 World Cup 2024, Team India would like to win another ICC trophy.
Now the question arises that what will be the Indian squad for the Champions Trophy. Especially after losing the series against Sri Lanka last year in the ODI format, this time the expectations from the team are even higher.
Shreyas Iyer is known for his brilliant batting and ability to handle the innings under pressure. He can prove to be an important player for India in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, which is going to start from February 19. Iyer can play a big role in strengthening the middle order of Team India. Especially against spin bowling, his technique and ability to accelerate the innings in difficult situations makes him a reliable finisher.
Iyer last played for India on the Sri Lanka tour in August. However, he could score only 38 runs in that series and his average was 12.66. But, after this, he made a great comeback with excellent performance in the domestic season.
Despite performing well in the ODI World Cup held at home in 2023, Shreyas was dropped from the BCCI's central contract list. The reason for this was some issues to his discipline, which also included his absence in domestic tournaments.
After the defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, the Indian team will now focus on maintaining its momentum and another ICC title after winning the T20 World Cup in 2024.
Shreyas Iyer has a total of 4,336 runs in his name in 14 Tests, 62 ODIs and 51 T20 matches. His average is 39.77 and strike rate is 96.57. These also include six centuries. In the 2023 ODI World Cup, he scored 530 runs, in which his average was 66.25 and strike rate was 113.24.
Iyer's performance in domestic cricket has also been excellent. In Ranji Trophy, he scored 452 runs in four matches, in which his average was 90.40 and strike rate was 88.80. His highest score was 233 runs.
He also performed brilliantly in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024. Scored 345 runs in nine matches, in which his average was 49.28 and strike rate was 188.52. In this tournament, Mumbai won the title under his captaincy.
Even in Vijay Hazare Trophy, Shreyas scored 325 runs in five matches. His unbeaten inning of 137 runs against Puducherry gave Mumbai a big win of 163 runs. His explosive innings of 114 runs in 55 balls against Karnataka showed that he can dominate in any format.
Shreyas Iyer's experience and ability to perform in difficult conditions makes him an important player in big tournaments. Keeping him out of the Champions Trophy 2025 squad could be a big mistake for India.
