While talking to students in an engineering college in Chennai, Ashwin had asked them, 'Is anyone interested in asking questions in Hindi?' The reaction of the students regarding this was very shocking. No one showed interest in Ashwin's question. After this the former cricketer said, 'I believe that I should say that Hindi is not the national language of the country but only an official language'.

This statement of Ashwin came at a time when 'World Hindi Day' is being celebrated on 10 January. Ashwin had given this statement while addressing students in a private college on January 9. It is noteworthy that even though Hindi is not the national language of India, it has the status of official language. Hindi got this status on 14 September 1949. It is written in the Indian Constitution that the official language of the nation will be Hindi and the script will be Devanagari.

Ravichandran Ashwin had said goodbye to international cricket in the middle of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The third match of the five-Test series between India and Australia was played in Brisbane, after which Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket. Ashwin played 287 matches for India and took a total of 765 wickets. He showed the magic of his bowling in all formats but was especially successful in Tests. Ashwin is the Indian bowler who has taken the second most wickets (537) in Tests after Anil Kumble (619).
