After India's horrendous 1-3 loss to Australia in the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the fans have expressed displeasure over Rohit Sharma's captaincy and after he opted out of the final Test in Sydney, calls for a new captain has been made.
The obvious name, which pops up in everyone's mind is premium fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah. The 31-year-old has been carrying the Indian side single-handedly for now and many feel that he should be made the captain.
Former India cricketer, Sanjay Manjrekar asserts that it is a 'no-brainer' when it comes to choosing Bumrah as Rohit's replacement at the helm.
"It's a no-brainer for me. The next Test series in England and Bumrah has to be the Test captain. Rohit Sharma as a batter has not done enough considering the loss to NZ at home plus he opted out of the playing XI because he did not fit in. There are too many uncertainties around him and I think that Bumrah is at the top of his game. There was nothing in the Australia series that we saw that he is not captaincy material," Sanjay Manjrekar said on ESPNcrcinfo.
But recently in the final Test, he didn't bowl in the final session and as a result, he was forced to go off the field due to a back spasm. Reports are coming thick and fast, he would be rested for the England white-ball series this month, so that he can get fit in time for the Champions Trophy in Feb.
Bumrah earlier also had to sit out for several months due to injuries and the management has protected him at all costs, so that he can get fit in time for big-ticket events.
But now the question arises, how someone can be a full-time Test captain, if he is rested very often.
Manjrekar feels he should pick and choose the marquee series and also explained the role of vice-captaincy in Bumrah's absence.
"When he is unfit or missing we will think about who will lead the team next. There is so much of international cricket happening. You have to see and pick out which ones you are going to play. He can be rested in the bilaterals in the home series. Pick out your marquee series, and make Bumrah captain in those. The choice of vice-captain is important, I have no idea who will be. But I know that there are guys who should not be. There are guys who would want to be, but the first thing you want is that the vice-captain should walk into the team based on their performances. There were talks of Shubman Gill walking in as a vice-captain in Australia, but look how that has changed," he further added.
