After the crushing defeat suffered by the Indian cricket team in the Border Gavaskar Trophy, Team India is on the target of former cricketers. India's crushing defeat broke the hearts of cricket fans, while former Indian cricketers also seemed very angry over this and are continuously giving advice to the Indian team for the future. Now Sanjay Manjrekar has given a wonderful advice to the Indian team which can save it from going on the path of destruction. Keeping Test cricket in mind, Manjrekar suggested India not to distance itself from specialist players.
Sanjay Manjrekar, while talking to ESPN Cricinfo after India lost the Border Gavaskar Trophy, said, 'India was gradually moving away from specialist players. The history of Test cricket shows that this has never worked. Manjrekar said that this can definitely happen in one or two games but not always. The former cricketer further said, 'They (Indian team) should now stop and think about their strategy. The team should give priority to specialist batsmen and bowlers.
Sanjay Manjrekar also appeared unhappy with more preference being given to all-rounders. He said, 'The way this series progressed and India started giving chances to more all-rounders in their team. It is understandable why both Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar have been included in the team. Similarly, the decision to include Nitish Kumar Reddy was beyond comprehension.
Even though Manjrekar has raised questions on Nitish Kumar Reddy's selection in the team, his performance among the three all-rounders was good with both ball and bat. But he also played two more matches than Jadeja and Sundar. Reddy scored 298 runs in five matches. But as an all-rounder he could not impress with his bowling. He took only five wickets. Jadeja scored 135 runs while taking 4 wickets in three matches. Sundar scored 114 runs while taking three wickets in three matches.
Manjrekar also gave important advice to captain Rohit Sharma. He further said, 'Rahul Dravid (when he was the head coach of Team India) used to give opportunities to specialist players. Rohit should have maintained the same winning mentality. The captain should have played a stronger role in team selection. According to Manjrekar, even though Gautam Gambhir's thinking may have been different for team selection, Rohit as a captain should have an important role in it.
